There has been much attention in the media lately about these medicines and the potential for increased suicide risk  in teenagers. In fact, one of the main reasons it is advisable that psychiatrists follow patients on these medications is because of suttle mood/side effect  changes specialists are trained to see.When starting an antidepressant,a patient should be seen within 1-2 weeks for follow up and re-evaluation. Whether these medicines actually do increase suicidality in teenagers continues to be debated but either way a specialist should be involved in the evaluation.
