Psychotherapy can be grouped into thre general categories. The first is structured/behavioral therapy which is very structured and often involves homework, logs, journals, and is often time limited.Used for anxiety disorders, phobias often.
Next is Supportive Therapy which , as it sounds, is mostly supportive where the therapist helps reinforce coping skills and acts as a supportive listener . This approach is useful when coping with tragedies such as deaths, divorces, etc.
Lastly there is dynamic/analytic therapy, often portrayed in the movies with the patient on a black couch. This type of therapy often requires weekly or even 2-3 x per week sessions where the therapist helps the patient unlock issues in the conscious/unconscious/subconscious mind. The manner in which the patient and therapist relate in the room is critical to the "interpretations" (goldmine connections between actions/thoughts/emotions) of the therapy
